One of the make or break choices in a bathroom or kitchen renovation.. because it can have people saying 'wow' or 'oh.. uh' - the perfect countertop material can really set the tone for the rest of the space.

There are 8 countertop materials that are popular for your vanity top. Some things to think about are appearance, cost, durability, availability and maintenance.

Soapstone

Seen as making its comeback - this is the sleeper material that many people are looking at when the shop countertop materials. Its soapy feel and unique appearance are appealing to those who want a standout style that is also timeless. While it can scratch and dent - those imperfections can be easily remedied and cleaning it is super easy. As it is not porous - it doesn't hold any of the bacteria that other surfaces can retain. AND - its affordable at $60 - $105 per square foot.

*B0nus - its chemical free (on the off chance you want to recycle or replace it).

Quartz

THE TOP of the tops... super durable, lasts forever, multiple color options, low maintenance and environmentally friendly. One of the best materials you can use, BUT also the most expensive. It also imitates the look of limestone, granite and marble - however it is by far the most resistant to scratches, dents, and stains then the lot.

Ceramic Or Porcelain

Believe it or not, with today's technology, ceramic/porcelain countertops are making a resurgence and can sometimes mimik other materials like wood and leather. Ceramic countertops are easy to install, affordable and commonly found in the bigger box stores if you are into DIY. However it is also brittle and can stain easily, so maintenance can be challenging to keep that clean, like-new finish.

Marble

A beautiful choice by anyone's standards, marble is actually soft and very porous, and needs to be resealed every year or two. An elegant option with, a wide variety of colors and patterns, it is a great choice for a master bathroom, and with time has become a lot more affordable than it has been known to be.

Solid-surface

A less-expensive elegant look that is great for resale and heavy use. Solid-surface is extremely durable, low maintenance, and resistant to mold, making it easy to clean. Solid-surface tops are seamless, they have integrated sink basins and are easy to maintain, however, they will definitely scorch when burned.

Granite

One of the first countertop surfaces that comes to mind when discussing materials for your bathroom or kitchen renovation, granite can pack a punch in the impact category but will cost you in all aspects of the design - not just the cost of the stone. Granite is a one of a kind look, attractive and long-lasting, available in many color options. It is also scratch resistant and practically flame resistant, as well. The downside is the maintenance and porosity of the stone - which requires an occasional reseal and polish treatment.

Concrete

Concrete has become very popular in recent years, and they are beautiful to look at when they are stained, polished and/or even texturized. They are great for heavy-use family bathrooms and are extremely strong and durable. BUT - when they crack - there is not option other than to replace the entire slab.

Laminate

Said to be the most economical and affordable, laminate is and inexpensive option and can give you the look of a more expensive marble. Laminate is durable, easy to clean and install and there are multiple finishes available. While it doesn't stain - it will burn, dull and dent easily and, even though damages can be repaired, this material just doesn't hold up over the long haul.
