How Many Pillows Is Too Many?

Writer's picture: Melanie BlackwellMelanie Blackwell

How many? I am asking for a friend.. By the way, my name is "Friend" - especially if anyone has ever told you that you have a 'pillow problem'.

Well, as a general rule, experts have found the following numbers are helpful if you are not wanting to overcrowd a "space":

Full/Queen Bed: on AVERAGE anywhere from 4-7 pillows should be. a great rule of thumb! (Now, I don't know about you, but beyond 8 and you are just taking pillows off and putting them back on the bed ALL. DAY.)

King Bed: much the same as a Queen bed, on average, anywhere from 7 - 10.. if you are like me, you would likely prefer a fuller look, and as a kind sized bed is larger, it would require a few more pillows

Couches/Chairs:

One seater: 0-1 (I don't know about you, but pillows say 'cozy'/'homey'/'comfy' to me, so having the option of a pillow for your back or your lap or to lean on is a nice touch if you have chairs in your living space

Sofa/chaise: 2-5 these can be kept at either end (as a mirror to each other) OR placed in the center and spreading out, according to height (also as a mirror)

Sectional: 4 (at MINIMUM) - 7 and this can depend on the size of your sectional, but a variety can be helpful and create 'fluff' and comfort for the weekend couch surfer AND the chronic chaise sleeper alike!

Types of Pillows you can keep in mind when styling the bed AND the couch:

1. Euro Pillows (usually a larger, square pillow)

2. Sleeping pillows (you can pick pillows based on the way you sleep!)

3. King pillows

4. Accent/throw pillows

5. breakfast pillows or lumbar pillows

Not sure about colors and patterns and how to arrange all those cute designs in your bedroom or living space? I can help with that! Give me a call and we can chat about all things design: 724-579-3511 (melanie.blackwell31@gmail.com)
